Virginia Beach has three main areas for fishing! Inshore fishing, Nearshore fishing (deep sea fishing) and Offshore fishing. Each provide their own unique experiences, seasons, tactics and species.
Inshore Fishing in Virginia Beach is world renowned! Cobia and Red Drum being the spotlight for many anglers both local and visiting. These fish are some of the largest inshore species you will find and they fight hard! Cobia and Red drum during the summer are hunted by a Sight-fishing. A technique where we search for these fish on the surface and cast using bucktails and live bait. When weather doesn't allow or in the fall we typically spend more time bottom fishing. Other inshore species that are of note include Spanish mackerel, bluefish, spadefish, tautog, speckled trout, black drum and stripers. Mid June is the Absolute best time for inshore fishing in Virginia Beach. A 6 hour inshore fishing trip in Virginia beach will is the best way to target cobia, red drum and Spanish mackerel. 8 hour inshore fishing trip is the grand slam where we can hit some closer shipwrecks for spadefish & flounder and then make our way back for cobia, Spanish mackerel and bluefish.
Nearshore fishing in Virginia Beach has some great shipwrecks booming with history and fish. Black sea bass holds the spotlight here most of the time except late fall and in the winter, then it would be Bluefin Tuna. Black sea bass are delicious to eat and hold in schools of substantial numbers. Shipwrecks will hold other species such as triggers, flounder, tautog, amber jacks, spadefish, mahi and a few others. Black Seabass is best fished in May and June and then again in the fall and February when we have a winter season. Bluefin Tuna show off Virginia Beach late November and can stay nearshore til about Mid January. These fish can weight over 600+ pounds and provide plenty of good meat for the freezer. We might even get to have some fresh sashimi on the boat!
Offshore fishing in Virginia Beach is a long haul but worth the adventure. Yellowfin tuna, wahoo, big eye tuna, white marlin, tile fish and even blue marlin all hold the spotlight here. While these are long days they provide the biggest reward and the catch of a lifetime. Mornings are spend deep dropping for tiles and hitting grass lines and debris for mahi. Then we move onto trolling for tuna, wahoo and billfish. The best time for tilefish is opening week in May and the yellowfin tuna will start around the same time. Billfish show up the later part of the summer and into early fall.
