Bluefin Tuna Fishing Charters in Virginia Beach, VA

Book Now

Virginia Beach is one of the best-kept secrets on the East Coast for bluefin tuna fishing — and Kraken Charters is here to put you on them. The Mid-Atlantic shelf break, accessible within a day's run from Little Creek Inlet, draws giant Atlantic bluefin tuna from late fall through early spring, often in numbers that rival more famous destinations like Hatteras and Montauk. Whether you're chasing your first bluefin or looking to upgrade from a keeper to a true giant, Captain Tom's local knowledge and targeted approach gives you the best shot at one of the ocean's most powerful fish.

When to Fish Bluefin Tuna in Virginia Beach

Atlantic bluefin tuna arrive in Mid-Atlantic waters as water temperatures drop in late fall, typically showing up in fishable numbers by November. The peak window runs from December through February, when large concentrations of school bluefin and medium bluefin stage along the shelf edge and offshore lumps within range of Virginia Beach. Giant bluefin — fish over 73 inches — are also encountered during this window, making Virginia Beach one of the few places on the East Coast where you can realistically target a 300–600 lb fish on a day trip.

By March, most fish have begun their northward migration toward New England and Canadian waters, though late-season stragglers can offer opportunities into early spring depending on conditions. Water temperature and bait migration are the two biggest factors — Captain Tom monitors both closely and will give you an honest read on whether the fish are in range before you commit to a trip.

How We Fish for Bluefin Tuna

Bluefin tuna are among the most powerful fish in the ocean — a 100 lb fish can peel off 200 yards of line in seconds and fight for over an hour. Getting them to the boat requires the right technique, the right gear, and a captain who knows how to read the fish. At Kraken Charters, we run dedicated bluefin trips using methods proven on the Mid-Atlantic grounds. There are a few methods but we typically focus on the tried and true method of trolling:

Chunking: We anchor or drift over productive structure and deploy a chum slick of cut butterfish or mackerel to draw fish to the boat. Baits are fished at varying depths on heavy fluorocarbon leaders — when a bluefin picks up a bait, the result is explosive.

Jigging: When fish are actively feeding near the surface or on bait schools, vertical jigging with heavy metal jigs is devastatingly effective. This style demands physical stamina but produces some of the most exciting fishing of the year.

Trolling: On the run out or when covering ground looking for fish, we troll skirted lures and rigged natural baits. Trolling also produces incidental catches of wahoo and yellowfin during transition months.

All gear — heavy conventional rods, lever-drag reels, terminal tackle, and bait — is provided. We bring enough firepower for a serious bluefin encounter.

What to Expect on a Kraken Charters Bluefin Trip

Bluefin tuna fishing is not your average charter experience — these are long, demanding trips that reward patience and preparation. Here's what a typical bluefin trip with Kraken Charters looks like:

Departure is early — usually before sunrise — to make the run to offshore grounds in time for the best morning bite window. The run to productive bluefin structure from Little Creek Inlet typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours depending on where the fish are holding.

Once on the grounds, Captain Tom will set up the spread based on conditions. If chunking, expect to spend several hours working the chum slick, watching for fish to appear in the spread. The wait is part of the experience — when a giant bluefin finally picks up a bait, nothing else compares.

Fights can last anywhere from 20 minutes for a school fish to well over an hour for a large or giant fish. Everyone on the boat has a role — and Captain Tom will coach you through every stage of the fight.

What's included: All rods, reels, terminal tackle, bait (butterfish/mackerel), fish handling equipment, and safety gear. Fish cleaning and bagging is included for retained fish. Bring your own food, drinks (BYOB), warm layered clothing, and sea sickness medication — winter offshore trips can be rough.

Bluefin Tuna Fishing FAQs

Yes. Virginia Beach sits within practical range of the Mid-Atlantic shelf edge — one of the most productive bluefin grounds on the East Coast. The winter fishery here rivals Hatteras and Cape Cod for school and medium bluefin, with giant bluefin also present November through March.

Virginia Beach bluefin trips commonly produce school fish (25–73 lbs) in numbers, with medium fish (73–200 lbs) mixed in during peak season. Giant bluefin over 300 lbs are caught every season — they're not guaranteed, but they're absolutely a realistic target. All Bluefin Tuna's over 73+ inches will be sold commercially. Any Bluefin Tuna between 27"-72" will be retrained by the customer for food.

you are covered by Kraken Charters fishing license and federal permits

Most productive bluefin grounds are 40–80 miles offshore from Little Creek Inlet. The run takes 1.5–3 hours each way depending on sea conditions and where fish are holding.

Retention is subject to NOAA federal quotas and size regulations that change annually. Captain Tom will brief you on current rules before departure. Many large and giant fish are tagged and released — an equally rewarding outcome.

December, January, and February are historically the most productive months for bluefin tuna out of Virginia Beach. November and March can also be excellent depending on water temperature and bait migration.
